Reflections for 13 and 14/01/2023

Remember when I used to write these reflections daily? When I would complete them neatly and somewhat deliriously on the bus between Camberwell and Vauxhall? Me neither. Or is it me niether?

Anyway, I spent the limited time I had avaialble to me on Friday for project work on completing the contextual research on the poem. Unforutnately, John Montague and his wife Elizabeth Wessel (to whom the Landing is dedicated to) aren't quite as famous or well documented as my GCSE poets, meaning that I wasn't able to find as much information as I would have liked. The general idea seems to be that the poem's most important role is addressing the lack of plane based poems in the literary canon, so that's cool I guess? The plane idea has opened my mind up to reinterpreting this poem in a whole new way, and an article in the Irish Times seems to confirm the romantic themes I initially spotted in my first read.

After this, I spent much of 13 and 14/01/2023 determining the final outcome of my project. I toyed around with the idea of creating fake marketing for an art exhibition about the poem set at the Barbican. I partly wanted to continue on the theme of the barbican from my previous project, as well as try and complete what the previous project failed to do because I never ended up turning my painting into a poster. I did some pretty in-depth research about the barbican's graphic design and marketing, and some of it did prove to be really interesting. However, I could only think of two projects for it (an animation and a Risoprint), and the whole thing felt really overcomplicated. However, the experience will definitely be useful for my Camberwell application, as I can talk about how I might have ended up taking my Barbican Project further for question one. Instead, I have decided to focus the project on Risoprinting, as I have been really fascinated with this form of printing since I heard about it back in the 'Gates to the Circus' project. My ultimate end goal is to create a series of Risoprinted postcards of the various metaphors and similies present within the poem, such as

"Split jewel caskets"

"Like travelling through the ambergris-heavy belly of a whale"
"A Lotus on a steam"

"How the floor of the earth is thick inlaid"

"My late, but final anchoring"

I am really looking forward to taking my first proper venture into printmaking, and this will still allow me to continue exploring digital art-- something I am feeling really passionate about right now. I've already done lots of research on how Risoprinting works, and I have begun planning the composition for the first of my postcards.
